Minister's welcome
Welcome to the Job Guide.
You may have already started thinking about the future and what you want to do once you have finished school. Job Guide can help you to identify these options. You’ll find detailed information on more than 500 jobs, explaining what it’s really like to work in these jobs, as well as the type of study or training you would need to get there.
One of the best ways to discover what sort of jobs you might be good at and find interesting is to think about the things that you enjoy doing — both in and out of school. These could be school subjects or activities that you really like, such as sport, music or science, or areas you’ve been involved in through part-time or volunteer work.
You might also want to talk to your friends, parents, teachers and career advisers about your interests, skills and potential job choices. Parents Talking Career Choices, a brochure for your parents or carers, can help you start sharing ideas and discussing your options.
2012 is the Australian Year of the Farmer, and to celebrate our farmers we’ve included additional information about rural studies. This covers jobs in traditional and emerging areas of farming, such as aquaculture, crops for food, livestock, wool and timber. Farming isn’t just about ‘farms’; many jobs support our agriculture industry, like agricultural scientists, heavy vehicle motor mechanics, veterinarians, storepersons, geographical information system officers, and importers and exporters. These are just a few of the many options that you can explore.
The Australian economy is constantly changing. Industries that are small today can increase in importance over the course of a few years, and new jobs are emerging all the time. You are also likely to have many different jobs over your lifetime, so I encourage you to explore the many possibilities and opportunities available to you.
Whatever choice you make, I wish you all the best for the future.
